Madge Wright MBE
Past President
Madge Wright MBE was a very special person. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother. Her sudden death on 3 March 2008 left her family , Gateway and a very wide circle of friends completely devastated.
Madge continually worked for the good of others, whether it be for her family, her friends, neighbours or the children in Sunnylands Primary School where she worked as a “dinner lady” for so many years to name a few examples.
Her “other family” as she continually called them were the members of Mencap and Gateway. She worked tirelessly for these two organisations and loved all the members and helpers. She had just arrived home from a meeting of Gateway on the evening she died so she was doing what she loved right up to the end of her life.
She also contributed to other charity work, especially as a volunteer in the Action Cancer charity shop in Carrickfergus. This shop moved to new premises shortly after Madge’s death and the new premises were officially opened by her daughter on 29 March 2008 in memory of a wonderful woman. The kiddies corner in the shop is known officially as “Madge’s Corner” and a photograph and memorial plaque take pride of place above the counter of the shop.
Madge was very well respected within the Carrickfergus community as a whole and a fitting tribute was a minute’s silence held in her memory at the first meeting of the Council after her death.
